8/3: Stop Motion Lesson Plan

Figure Drawing and Stop Motion Animation for 12th graders

Learning Objective:  students will learn more about  figure drawing, drawing motion,  as well as the process of making a stop motion film.

Prompt: The goal of this project is to make a 5 or more second stop motion animation composed of charcoal drawings of a human doing an action. We still start by talking about potential actions a human could do  ( jump, dance, kick, smile, spin, run, walk, fly, etc.) Then, students will partner up and download the stop motion animation app on their phones. The will make a photo based stop motion animation of their partner doing their actions ( take pictures of every step needed to show their partner performing their action) Then they will draw every photo moment from the  photo based stop motion  in charcoal on newsprint. They will take photos of their drawings on the stop motion app to make their final product. They will see if they are missing any moments from their action and continue to draw moments that they need and then recreate the final stop motion.

Materials: cell phone stop motion animation app, charcoal, squishy eraser, newsprint

  1. Hi Sarah, I really enjoyed reading this lesson plan. It is well thought out and I really enjoy the combination of charcoal drawings and stop motion animation. I think this is a good way to merge traditional and digital mediums. I also really enjoyed seeing how stop motion could be used with older students as I have only really considered it with young students. It is great to see how it could work in a high school setting with a more advanced concept. My suggestion for furthering this lesson is to explain how they would learn about figure drawing a little more and maybe practice it a little before jumping into a stop motion project as I feel it can be a daunting topic to have to learn about.
